# Install

> Set up Silmaril on one Mac using the Stable DMG.

<a id="install" />

For organization-managed Macs, use [managed deployment](/docs/macos/managed-deployment).

You need a Mac running {macosRelease.minimumOS} and the Firewall URL and API key from your [deployment access](/docs/start/quickstart#get-access). Stable {macosRelease.version} (build {macosRelease.build}) is Guardian Disabled and installs no privileged background service. Contact support before replacing an incompatible installed variant.

## Install from the DMG

  <Step title="Download">
    Download the <a href={macosRelease.dmgUrl}>Stable DMG</a> for this interactive install. The <a href={macosRelease.pkgUrl}>Stable PKG</a> is the MDM artifact. Both are {macosRelease.version} ({macosRelease.build}), Guardian Disabled.

    **Expected result**<br />
    The file is the Stable Guardian Disabled DMG for that version and build.

    **If this differs**<br />
    Stop. This hand install uses that DMG. The PKG belongs to [managed deployment](/docs/macos/managed-deployment).

  <Step title="Install and open">
    Drag Silmaril to Applications and open it.

    **Expected result**<br />
    Silmaril opens from `/Applications/Silmaril.app`.

    **If this differs**<br />
    Confirm the app is in Applications, then open that copy. An app that does not open is not yet ready to [verify](/docs/macos/verify).

  <Step title="Connect and protect">
    Enter the Firewall URL and API key supplied by Silmaril, save the connection, prepare supported agents, then start a new agent session and confirm current Protection activity. A key typed here is stored in that user's login Keychain.

    **Expected result**<br />
    The connection is saved. When the first-run connection screen is displayed, it reports Firewall connection verified. A new supported-agent session shows current activity in Protection.

    **If this differs**<br />
    Recheck the URL and key Silmaril supplied. Missing Protection activity means protection is not confirmed. Dragging the app into Applications, or saving a connection, does not by itself establish protection. Continue with [Verify the endpoint](/docs/macos/verify).

<a id="nightly" />

## Nightly channel

Nightly is an app-owned update channel. Selecting it changes where the in-app updater looks for new builds. There is no separate Nightly download, and the current Nightly build is {macosRelease.version} ({macosRelease.build}), the same as Stable. Under MDM update authority, the channel setting does not install builds. Your MDM deploys each PKG.
