# Updates and channels

> Choose app-owned or MDM-owned updates and verify each deployed build.

## Choose update ownership

| Update authority | How updates arrive |
| - | - |
| App | Silmaril's in-app updater uses the selected channel |
| MDM | Your MDM deploys each PKG update |

The managed starter profile sets `SilmarilUpdateAuthority` to `mdm`. A package install alone leaves update ownership to the configured setting.

## Choose a channel

Use Stable for the standard deployment path. Select Nightly deliberately for a pilot. [Install](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/install.md#nightly) lists the current artifacts and channel behavior.

Under MDM authority, changing `SilmarilUpdateChannel` selects a preference while your MDM remains responsible for package delivery.

## Deploy and verify

For app-owned updates, use the app's update controls. For MDM, follow the update section for [Jamf Pro](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/jamf.md#update-or-replace-policy), [Iru](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/iru.md#update-or-replace-policy), or [Fleet](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/fleet.md#update-or-replace-policy).

Keep profile and payload identities intact when replacing managed policy. On a pilot Mac, [verify the release, connection, and fresh agent activity](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/verify.md) before expanding the update.

See [managed settings](https://silmaril.dev/docs/macos/settings.md#updates) for update keys and accepted values.
